IPL Photofacial is a powerful, virtually pain free Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment with Smart Pulse technology, to target pigmented and vascular lesions resulting in a noticeably clearer, brighter skin with a more even complexion. It also enhances collagen production improving fine lines and wrinkles.
What Is IPL Photofacial Skin Rejuvenation?
IPL, or Intense Pulsed Light, is an innovative treatment that uses broad-spectrum light to treat a wide range of skin concerns. Unlike laser treatments (which use a single wavelength), IPL delivers high-intensity pulses of light that penetrate to the deeper layers of the skin without harming the superficial skin layer.
This non-invasive treatment targets pigmented cells, blood vessels, and unwanted hair, making it ideal for treating a range of skin conditions.
In a professional setting, IPL is used to:
- Improve skin texture, tone, and clarity
- Reduce facial redness, vascular lesions, and spider veins
- Fade brown spots, pigmented spots, and skin discolouration
- Boost collagen and elastin production
- Minimise pore size and smooth uneven skin texture
The result? A radiant complexion with firmer skin, better tone, and a visible reduction in the appearance of skin damage.

How Does It Work?
Intense Pulsed Light with Smart Pulse technology delivers precise light through several layers of skin, which generates heat when it’s absorbed by the targeted tissue.
This corrects imperfections in the skin without damaging surrounding tissue. At the same time, a real-time cooling system works to keep your skin protected.
Benefits
Why do clients keep coming back for IPL?
- Treats a range of benefits in one go: pigmentation, redness, texture,
unwanted side effects from sun exposure, and more - Stimulates natural collagen production and improves the wound healing process
- Works across the face, neck, chest, and hands
- Safe for lighter skin types and sensitive skin
- Minimal side effects and downtime
It’s the light therapy equivalent of a great at-home routine paired with
professional-grade results — only faster and deeper.
What Skin Conditions Does It Treat?
IPL is ideal for treating:
- Sun-damaged skin, including liver spots and dark spots
- Vascular conditions like broken blood vessels, facial redness, and
Campbell-de-Morgan spots - Skin imperfections like enlarged pores and uneven skin tone
- Pigmentation issues from ageing or chemical peels
- Acne scars, active acne breakouts, and post-inflammatory marks
- Unsightly veins and blood vessel lesions
It also plays a key role in ongoing acne management programs, helping to
reduce bacteria and inflammation.
Treatable Areas
Despite the name “Photo facial”, IPL can be used beyond the face.
Common treatment areas include:
- Face and neck
- Décolletage
- Back of hands
- Arms, shoulders, and upper back
- Upper back (especially in men with pigmentation)
Wherever there’s marked skin, sun damage, or pigmentation irregularities,
IPL can usually help.
Contraindications
IPL isn’t suitable for everyone
Here’s who should steer clear or consult their primary care skin cancer doctor first:
- Those with active skin cancer or undergoing intervention for skin cancers
- Dark skin or darker skin types (due to risks of skin discolourations)
- Active skin infections, cold sores, or eczema
- Recent use of tanning creams or tanning beds
- Those taking blood thinners or photosensitising medications
- Pregnant individuals or those with a medical history of sensitive skin reactions
- Melasma sufferers (heat/light can worsen it)
A complimentary consultation with a qualified professional is vital.
We always consider skin type, medical treatments, and skin goals before suggesting IPL.
Preparation
2 Weeks Before:
- Stop using retinoids, acids, and exfoliants
- Avoid sun exposure or tanning (natural or fake)
- Pause any photosensitising meds or herbs (check with your GP)
48 Hours Before:
- No waxing, threading, or peels in the area
- Don’t use active skincare
- Shave the area if there’s fine hair (for areas like the neck or chest)
Arrive with clean, product-free skin. And yes — you’ll need to skip makeup post-treatment,
so plan your day accordingly.
Procedure
A typical IPL session takes 30–45 minutes depending on the area. Here’s the usual flow:
- Cleansing — skin is prepped and fully cleaned
- Cool gel application — this helps the handpiece glide and protects the skin
- Test pulse — we check your skin’s reaction and adjust settings accordingly
- Flashes of light — you’ll wear protective goggles; expect a “rubber band snap” sensation with each pulse
- Cooling and soothing — post-treatment masks, LED light or ice packs may be applied
Most clients say it’s slightly uncomfortable but tolerable, especially with modern machines that use contact cooling.
Aftercare
Week-by-Week Guide (Based on Client Feedback)
Immediately After:
- Mild redness (like a sunburn)
- Warmth in the skin
- Some slight swelling in sensitive areas
Days 2–5:
- Darkening of pigmentation (“coffee ground” effect) is normal
- Don’t pick, scrub, or exfoliate — let it slough naturally
- Redness may linger slightly in vascular areas
Days 6–10:
- Skin looks more even, glowy, and clear
- Pigment flakes off revealing fresh skin underneath
I always remind clients: the real magic unfolds gradually over 2–4 weeks as the
skin regenerates and collagen ramps up.
Side Effects
Potential Side Effects of IPL
- Redness and swelling (usually settles within hours)
- Crusting or flaking of pigmented spots
- Bruising in vascular areas
- Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (especially in darker skin types)
- Burns or blisters (rare — often linked to incorrect settings or sun exposure)
To minimise risks, always see a qualified practitioner, and follow aftercare to the letter.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
This depends on your goals and skin condition. But here’s a general guide:
- Pigmentation: 3–5 sessions, spaced 4 weeks apart
- Redness/capillaries: 3–6 sessions, depending on severity
- Texture/tone maintenance: 1–2 sessions every 6–12 months
At the studio, we typically design a bespoke plan after assessing your skin, lifestyle, and expectations. One treatment may refresh the skin, but a course is where the true transformation happens.
Cost
Be warned, this is no ordinary laser, literally! Don’t get confused, IPL stands for
Intense Pulsed Light and these machines aren’t lasers.
IPL machines are termed “broad spectrum” because they deliver many wavelengths of light
to the skin at once. Lasers, on the other hand, deliver just one specific wavelength,
making Venus Versa IPL superior in its ability to treat a number of different
skin concerns simultaneously.
